New updates to the World Rugby regulations !

World Rugby has updated its Rule No. 1 relating to the rugby field.


The changerelates specifically to the field dimensions specified in section 1.3.e of the regulations.

Game rule 1.3.e

Where possible, the perimeter area should be five metres wide, but must not be less than 3.5 metres wide for men and 3 metres for women.


Exemptions from World Rugby are possible


Minimum dimensions


If any of the minimum dimensions set out in Rule 1 cannot be met, a dispensation* must be granted by World Rugby.


It will only be granted if all field dimensions comply with the requirements set by Rule 1.


*Dispensation requests must be submitted at least two months prior to the event. Member Unions or Regional Associations must submit a request via an official letter from a senior representative to : pitchdispensation@worldrugby.org


In-goal area length


For international matches* governed by World Rugby, the organization provides guidance on the dispensation process related to field dimensions and minimum pitch sizes on its website :


*National competitions are managed by the local Union, which approves all pitch dimensions. However, it is recommended to follow World Rugby guidelines.
